The Green Hornet Review

 The Green Hornet Review
Starring: Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz
Director: Michel Gondry
Year: 2011

The Green Hornet was a radio/TV/comic character, and if he had all that, he obviously must have had a fan base at one point. But as always in time, people stopped caring, or even knowing. And then dumb shits like me don’t know anything about it, and when they make it into a new movie in 2011, they make a review without knowing the source material. So know that going in. I usually always try to get the source material first, but I really don’t think I’ll ever in this lifetime go back and find out the history of the Green Hornet that is now portrayed by Seth Rogen. Anyway, did I like this movie? Yeah, I did. It followed a recent trend of comedy action movies, but are a little serious as well. Basically a comedy with a couple car chases and a more serious tone. Let’s just say the first scene is some superhero back-story, and then it’s followed by James Franco and the main villain giving easily the best scene in the movie, and by far the funniest. Little taste if you don’t know what to expect. But for a quick synopsis, know that Seth Rogen’s father is a wealthy newspaper head guy, and he dies, and know his screw up son Seth Rogen fills his shoes… while also dressing up as crime fighter that is known as a villain, and then he has this really cool Asian sidekick and… well the Green Hornet. Wikipedia exists if you want a better synopsis. Anyway, the comedy, it was there. It wasn’t fantastic, but it got a large audience in it just by having Seth Rogen and marketing itself like a comedy. But I wouldn’t say it’s laugh out loud comedy aside from that opening scene. It’s pretty much that comedy that keeps you grinning from time to time, but nothing past that. And before I mentioned the source material, and does it feel based off something? Yes, it feels like when they remake a movie. But it’s not distracting or anything. As for the action scenes, they’re pretty cool. The car’s unique abilities are enough to keep it entertaining, and yeah, they’re was some cool fights. Also there was this one scene where it started branching off what these bad guys were doing, that wasn’t an action scene necessarily, but it was really unique and filmed in a cool way. And the characters, they’re likeable. It does feel a little forced bro comedy though. For instance they meet, have good times, breakup, makeup, walk away happily. Yeah, you’ve seen it a couple hundred times. If anything they just kind of skipped parts like the makup, it didn’t feel that genuine. But the characters were all still really cool, and I loved Chudnofsky, he’s probably one of the best villains in a comedy in this the time period this came out. As for the acting, it’s all good. Aside from Cameron Diaz who I felt could have been played by anybody (hell some people could have done better) nobody was a weak link. Overall, it’s an easy flick. Point A to Point B, have some laughs, have a good time. Nothing big, nothing super great, just good. I know it go mixed to bad reviews, but again, I could care less, because I liked it. It’s a good time, that’s about it.
