"Creative Topic" #23: Media is Fantasy

So this is one of those ideas where once you think it, you can’t unthink it. (no that’s not a word, but I don’t care) Anyway, when you think of it, media is fantasy. Whether watching pictures move in cinema, staring at words on a page in literature, or punching buttons while watching more pictures in video games. In the end, nothing is happening. We are watching things happen in front of us. If you were an alien to this concept you’d see sheep staring at things for hours. And as a human who’ve delved hundreds, hell thousands and thousands of hours investing in movies, books, video games etc., I beg the question, is that what humans do? Do they watch things do work while they themselves live in a world that is most likely a lot less interesting then the one their in? And for most situations that involve a big question, I remember a movie that I feel says enough! Or a book, whatever. Bridge to Terabithia was a movie that delved into fantasy, and whether or not it was… I guess healthy? And I haven’t seen the movie since I was like nine, but I recently watched a review of it, and it talked about the ending. And the main girl, who was far into the fantasy, died. And after that it became a wonder whether it was right to delve into a fantasy. But the main character, although knowing at this point showed this fantasy land beyond this bridge to his sister. And like a person knowing a movie is fake, but continues to watch it anyway, he remained, bordering the fantasy. So first there is the unhealthy. The MMORPG, a large part of the thing I have with them is I feel they’re trying to grab reality out of your hands, and tries to make you live in the realm rather than tell a story. That’s living the fantasy. And it happens all the time. Usually there is a large amount of content needed, like a large series, or a long book series, but there are people who experience these stories again and again. They grab at anything, and adore everything. That I feel is the unhealthy, and "living the fantasy.” But then there’s the question of watching movies is normal, or healthy to begin with. Couldn’t two hours do a million things better. Although I can’t argue that, I feel movies (and other movies) are something I feel passionate about. I remember myself as a child, and I feel if I hadn’t seen these stories and medias, I’d have formed into an entirely different person. And I believe somebody should love themselves before anything. These stories reflect the real, entertain us obviously. A lot of people talk about escapism, and I do feel that’s a beautiful thing about these things. When I’m sad I could watch something to make feel better. When I’m angry I can put on a song that can bounce my anger at something else. When I want a good time, I can put on a funny movie. I feel media opened my mind, but in its own special way. And when I see people without that certain openness, to me that looks alien. I love my life, and my past, and the large amount of precious time we have on earth spending it in media. And yes, I’ll continue to do so, hoping others will do also.
