Me, Myself, and Irene Review

 Me, Myself, and Irene Review
Starring: Jim Carrey, Renee Zellweger, Chris Cooper
Director: The Farrelly Brothers
Year: 2000

When I was younger, I remember a number of movies I would watch at my sister’s place. Being young, my opinion wasn’t hard to grab, but not to fear, none of these movies I can really remember as bad, this one included. Anyway, me, myself, and Irene is about a guy named Charlie. He basically builds up all his frustration ever since his wife left him for a midget who was giving him some crap, and left him with their kids. All three of them. So now he’s miserable. So he creates an alternate personality, Hank, who’s a dick. But he’s a dick you love dammit. I’ll take an example. If Charlie told a little girl to stop playing jump rope in the street, she’d probably just scream loudly until he ran away. If that happened to Hank, he’d dunk her head into a pond and call her a fuck face. Yeah that happens. It’s a rater pg-13 movie that actually turns out to be rated R. Anyway, after that Charlie or Hank or whatever you want to call him gets throw in this case. (He’s a police officer) At first he simply escorts Renee Zellweger’s character somewhere, but since we need a movie it turns into a kind of chase meets road trip movie with a character with mutli personality disorder. Is it funny? Yeah, it gets a few chuckles, not every joke hits, but the feel good aspect is probably the best part. The one song they kept playing basically is enough to turn it into a feel good movie. And of course it is a Jim Carrey movie, so expect more of the funny faces and really over the top acting. And I don’t mind any of it besides maybe once in a scene where everything was normal, and Jim was having this skit with his mouth being dry because he had a pill in the background. It was like while they were filming that scene somebody stepped in and was like, "No! Too boring, add Jim Carrey doing stupid shit in the background!” Not to mention the side characters are all very likeable. Jim Carrey’s black giant ass kids that are geniuses mixed with black comedy are hilarious, and one of the most memorable pieces to a movie. There are times when side characters start to only be a running gag, but I didn’t think any of these were, including them. Then there was Whitey, a.k.a Casper, a.k.a Milky. Yeah, that guy exists. And he doesn’t have a really big point in the movie, but somehow he fits in the quirky weird guy they found on their roadtrip aspect. And then I’ll just talk about the best part of the movie. That would be the switching personalities between Jim Carrey, and Hank. Hank even thought he talked stupid, he carried this movie. Every scene he’s in, he takes. And just the switching between the two is the most interesting part of this movie. Especially during the final act, when they start switching off like crazy, and Jim Carrey is basically playing two actors. And they even fight, which is probably the best scene in this movie. If there is ever a time where Jim Carrey comedy works, it’s during this scene. As for Renee Zellweger, she’s all right. She’s mostly there just to contrast Jim Carrey and act as a plot piece, but she does her job well and she’s likeable. Again, whenever there is a guy in the room doing what Jim Carrey is doing, there’s only so many reactions as to what you could do. And will I watch this movie over and over and over again? No, it’s not worth watching twice in the same year. But it’s that one light hearted movie in my VHS collection (yes I still have VHS tapes, and yes it’s what I watched this on, shut up) that I will occasionally pop in, and it will give me a good, but not great experience. And when I need to put a movie on for others, this is one of those safe picks. Not movies I’d show my friends, but needed to just show a random older person. I don’t think that’ll ever happen though, so I don’t even know why I’m bringing that up. Anyway, I think it’s a good movie, and it brings me back to those times at my Sister’s house when I’d put movies on and just think of simpler times. Times I could watch a running gag with a cow and still think it was really funny when maybe it wasn’t.

Me, Myself, and Irene gets a 3/5
Spoilers: Remember that part when Whitey said he was a murderer? Jesus, what the fuck? And then later he just says he’s never killed anybody! He’s like, "I was lying next to scitzo scared out my mind, what else was I suppose to do? Um… not tell him you’re a serial killer? Also, let’s give it up for Hank and giving a total one-eighty. I mean who has sex with somebody else’s body? And who has a love triangle with two people, in the same body!?
