DBZ Episode 1 Review (A New threat)

Now, to get to the reviews. I’d like to start off by saying the first DBZ episode doesn’t hold the same nostalgia like some television first episodes like Pokémon. It is like a really long show, and it starts off a long chain of events. The story tells you five years have taken place since the evil King Piccolo was thwarted (the events in dragonball) and now people were living in peace, but peace won’t last long. A strange space pod crashes onto the Earth, and a strangely dressed character emerges from the pod. He kills the one witness to his coming of Earth, then flies off to find a person named "Kakarot.” It introduces key characters of the series like Goku, Gohan, and Chi-Chi. The characters don’t have amazing openings, and to be honest if you just watch the first episode of DBZ not watching anything before, you won’t know anything about the characters. Most of the episode shifts from quirkiness between Gohan and Goku to the strange man from the space pod (Raditz) The Goku and Gohan quirkiness is fun and makes for a good example of how you knew of a time of peace, and in the end you get heavy foreshadowing. Gohan gets caught in a river, and then is falling down a waterfall. Goku can’t get to Gohan, but sees rather than felling into the waterfall, he is on a hanging branch high above the water, wondering how he got there. This probably will be forgettable if you haven’t watched any DBZ in your life, but this is really nice foreshadowing. But the only character in the first episode that shines is Raditz. Even Piccolo, who again was poorly introduced was afraid of Raditz. Raditz gave a huge ass question mark, and had you wondering what was next. And at the end of the episode, Raditz and the DBZ narrator hint heavily that what you knew about Goku in Dragonball completely changes, and if you didn’t watch Dragonball you are getting the first taste of who he is. The first episode shook up Dragonball, but did not do much for a random watcher. It doesn’t hold much nostalgia, and in the end other than starting off the show, it was just that nice extra footage. But you simply can’t hate the first episode of possibly your favorite television anime.

DragonBall Z episode 1 (A New Threat) gets a 2/5
