The Sorcerer's Apprentice Review

 The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Review
Starring: Jay Baruchel, Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina
Director: Jon Turteltaub
Year: 2010

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice started as a kind of cool idea. It would take the Fantasia clip and turn it into a movie, and live action, with Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel… yeah I don’t know about anyone else, but I didn’t know what to think going into this. But I’ll be honest, this was a really good movie, and the kind that got better the more you watched it. This was actually one of the first live action movies with Disney on the box, and it really felt like a Disney movie, and I’d happily put into that group. And they must have pulled some actually good writers in from Disney, because it was just as good as some other Disney movies. And is it like the little Fantasia part? No, not really. It fits that little clip in, but besides that it thinks of its own new story, and has the synopsis of the Fantasia moment fit somewhere in it. I mean a dude trying to stop a bunch of mops would have been kind of boring. Anyway the main character as a child basically has a dramatic experience the moment he was suppose to realize his destiny, then ten years later it hits him dead in the face again, and now he must become the Chosen One and learn magic from Nicolas Cage and get the girl. Yeah, not the first time ever movie, but it’s nicely executed in my opinion. First off, I loved the magic in the movie. It is resolved around science, and there is magic within science, and science within magic. The main character is a physics geek, so the whole science thing comes back. And other than Harry Potter it’s the only movie where magic is the only form of fighting, and it’s really cool. And it doesn’t stop them from having fun with it along the way. And the characters are also really cool. Again it was seen before, but it was nice to see it have its own form. Nicolas Cage as fucking Yen Sid, yeah, it worked. And Jay, this is the movie I think he’ll be remembered for, and it’s a shame more people won’t like this movie, because he deserves his own big movie. He plays the nerdy character to the fullest, and it wasn’t half assed like some others. He was a nerd, and a good character. As for story, it was possibly the best part of the movie. There was back-story, character development, ups and downs, and a lot of those fleshing out little things. The movie had its own world, and I can tell whoever was writing it actually cared about it. Sure he probably didn’t imagine Nicolas Cage as the guy, but hey, it worked. It’s just a really fun movie, and an actual family movie I can say is good for the whole family, and not in the cheesy way. The writing is great, the story is great, the characters for the most part are good, the world was awesome, the magic was dope, everything and more was good. As for complaints, I’ll get there. I was watching this for the second time just now, and as I was watching it I was swearing how I’d give it a big fat nine. But two big things stopped me when I reached them. One, the villains. Not that their characters are bad, but how they are dealt with are terrible. There are three. The main bad guy who’s part of the some big three, the mean apprentice, and big bad chick. And all three weren’t dealt with properly. That, and the fucking end. Seriously, It just ends, and yeah. It doesn’t wrap up around and make you say, "Wow, that was really good.” It’s like, "Okay, we’ve been here long enough, let’s get our asses out of here!” And when you really enjoyed a movie, and it has a ending that isn’t as satisfying as the rest of the movie, it kind of just leaving a bad feeling held in the air. Don’t get me wrong, this is a damn good movie, and was a very nice surprise. Bud fuck, it just wasted some potential it had to being a wonderful franchise, or a awesome classic. It’s just really fun, that’s the best compliment I have with it. There were at least a dozen scenes I thought were really cool, and at least a dozen more lines where I complimented the dialogue. I mean when in a Disney movie is Star Wars going to referenced… oh wait Disney bought Star Wars after this movie... anyway. This movie has been done before, and it’ll be done again. It’s simple, but very likeable. I thought it was great, and loved it. But God, it has something that I just loved, and I wanted more from it, and that disappointment is sad. But still the goods are very high, and the bads aren’t terrible.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice gets a 4/5
Spoilers: Okay, so the mean little apprentice dude just got killed… okay. I mean, I looked at this world that could have gotten expanded on, and that character being shitted on like that I didn’t think was all that good, he kind of felt worthless. What if they made a show during the time period where they had both apprentices and both masters? Oh, well the guy got killed. Then the main dude, THE MAIN DUDE, he dies worse than Bane. Did he die? He just got zapped, then was gone, like what the fuck. Then the main chick who we’ve only heard about comes along, and yeah, I do think she should have been there, but really, she’s just going to come in when the other villains just got pushed aside? I will say I liked all the scenes regardless and the one where the electricity was bouncing as he was showing it to that chick, that was good. Do nerds proud my man. But in all seriousness, this is a good movie, I really liked it.
