Episode 18 Review (The Waterbending Master)

And our heroes FINALLY reach the northern waterbending tribe, and you see why they’ve survived for so long. Before Aang can even find them they’re ready to kill the team. And not to mention it’s a fucking fortress. A beautiful fortress at that, this tribe is beautiful to look at. But anyway he’s the Avatar so they bring him in and he’s not a celebrity but he’s respected like usual. He’s given a master, a place to sleep, and Sokka makes a crush with the king’s daughter the princess. But oh no, Katara can’t learn waterbending because they don’t allow women to fight. I’m sorry, this is kind of a forced thing. I know they want to give more girl power and make Katara a better character while also getting this waterbending thing done, but really the Mulan episode? But Aang is like fuck you, if she’s not training, I’m not training. But Katara shows more responsibility like, "Hey, world’s ending, remember?” So Katara goes to the healing center like a good girl scout, and learns like to heal like all the other five year old girls. And while this goes on Sokka has a immediate crush with the princess, and I think she ran away crying three times, so that’ll tell you something right there. They have typical relationship banter, they like each other, but she’s of course engaged in a forced marriage. But she swaps spit with him regardless, so yeah, we have a typical romance, except not a tease like the other’s in the show. And less interesting, but I know where it goes, so it’s definitely not hurting the show. But then Aang starts to train Katara in secret but of course captain douche face sees them and says "fuck you person whose suppose to save the world, hatin’ on chicks is more important!” So Katara the next day faces him and asks she lets it go. But the smug bastard demands an apology, something she won’t accept. So he while walking buy is like, "just go back to the healing tent like the other women.” And Katara bitch slaps him over the head with water, and I like that. And then it is waterbending war! Seriously, Katara gets really good pretty fast. It’s probably one of the best fights in the series to be honest. Just seeing two water benders is pretty uncommon, and it’s really creative and fun considering. And seeing the environment of water and ice be used commonly to fight, it’s really cool. But then the guy sees her necklace, and knows he was engaged to her grandmother, but she didn’t like him, and left due to you know, him being a douche bag. This dude could have been Katara’s grandmother, that’s weird. But that’s enough for him to pass his philosophy. (But training the dude who was suppose to save the world wasn’t) And there’s also shit going on with Zuko. Zhao is going to attack the northern water tribe, so he literally just snags Zuko’s entire tribe. Then he sees Zuko’s swords, and makes the connection with the blue spirit. He gets the old pirates to attack Zuko, and they blow his shit away. Iroh then joins Zhao thinking Zuko is dead. (Zuko snuck on his ship, and Iroh joined him just to help) And yeah, a lot of shit happened, and it was a good set up for the season finale. I really liked this episode, even if a bit cheesy and forced. Been there done that, but they did it good. Not to mention we’re fucking here, and there’s ships blowing up, and water fights that don’t sound like five years olds playing, and Sokka’s getting girls. WHAT CRAZY WORLD DID WE STUMBLE INTO! Anyway, this was a really great episode I thought, and was really getting the scale raised. Fire vs. water, who will be the winner!?… okay under normal circumstances this is pretty obvious.
